Chelsea Buns are popular in small town bakeries around here. I have made it my mission to find the perfect chelsea :)

This one, loaded with red cherries, is from Don's Bakery in Bala, in Muskoka Ontario.

After a gorgeous, sunny, summer day of browsing, window shopping andwine tasting, I stopped for some iced tea and to 'smell the flowers' :) in beautiful Port Carling in Muskoka Ontario. These were set against a beautiful blue sky and Lake Muskoka - just after the RMS Segwun, the oldest steamship in North America, passed through the locks.. The RMS Segwun was built in 1867, and still cruises through the lakes as a cruise ship. It still is an operational Canada Post, thus the RMS - Royal Mail Ship.

Watery Wednesday #81 - Grab the SPF, Summer is Coming

It's almost here....summer at the beach!

Yes that is still ice broken up along the shoreline. Sssshhh ;)

Every year we wait until the small creek 'corrects' itself and the beach isn't so eroded. This rock is one of those special spots that everyone from every generation gets their picture take while sitting or standing on it. Many years this rock has been almost covered with water, but the last several years it is almost completely exposed. The Great Lakes water levels are dropping at alarming rates. After a mild winter, this year will be lower again.

I like Mellow Yellow's philosophy...the world looks better with a splash of yellow. Collingwood Ontario is a former ship building town on Georgian Bay in Ontario. It has the prettiest Main Street in Ontario. Lately more and more new shops are opening up as people are moving out of the city to smaller communties. This restaurant, Azzura, was a cheery splash of colour on a bleak, grey December day.

A Pretty Little Church -SOOC

This charming little community church on our beach is only open during the summer season. They have guest ministers and pastors and we have seen beautiful weddings here.

The past two years it hold a Christmas eve candlelight service with space heaters. It is just so pretty with the snow outside and such a feeling of fellowship and coziness inside. :)

Saving our Pine Trees

Over the years erosion and wild Georgian bay winds have affected the trees in a small park on our beach. The township has put up very extensive fencing, at great expense, and some snow fences to try and trap the sand to protect the trees and exposed roots. Perhaps some smaller fences around the affected trees may be as effective, less of an eyesore and make more 'sitting in the shade space' available - but we all know about local government studies and "consultants"

Green Thursday The Piping Plovers are Back

They're baaaaack :O)

Every year for the past 3-4 years the piping plovers have returned to the eastern beach in Wasaga beach. They make their nests in the sand for their young and we're waiting. The whole area and birding enthusiasts have falllen in love with them. There is another mesting area in Sauble Beach on Lake Huron.

Piping Plovers are rare, endangered birds. There are approximately 55 nesting couples around the Great Lakes and this year we have 2 couples and one other male here in Wasaga Beach. The other female stayed in Michigan apparently. They are waiting for their eggs to hatch, although they are late by about a week. Last year the eggs were lost during a hail storm and to a predator. :(

I posted some of the signs :0)) that the Ministry of Natural Resources have posted. ** Wasaga Beach shoreline is a provincial park and falls under the auspices of MNR. They have done a great job of maintaining the beach, preserving the sand dunes and educating the public on beach stewardship.

Along the boardwalk, there is a very large area fenced off.

One of the areas where the birds run around. The chicks are so cute and they zip along quickly ;) They like to get to the water's edge to get their little webbed feet wet ;) There are many have volunteers out all day talking about the plovers and documenting any activity :0) YAY to the Volunteers!!

I am taking these photos from behind a fence, obviously zoomed, which is why the photos are a bit blurred.

Taking care of their young.

They leave all the drift wood for the birds to nest and hide in. Their colours camouflage them from predators. They even left a dead seagull on the beach in hopes of scaring other gulls away. Notice the cage on the right, a protected area where they nest. We saw them exchange and take turns sitting on the eggs :)

And here are the little plovers running, and playing :) along the water! One, we called him Jack, liked to run ahead of the others. He was sort of an independent little fellow. They were fun to watch try to fly, at one point the three of them all flapped their little wings and got about 12 " off the ground before the fell back down! So cute!

I couldn't resist and had to participate in the McKlinky Blog Hop meme. It looks like fun!

I can't choose just one favourite photo, but I will go with this one. Simple times, relaxing times sitting on my beach :) As I get older I realize how much I appreciate these times.

I am covered with an SPF60 (as you can tell by the photo I would need it). Yup, I am a long time ebayer and love my ebay flip flops from the ebay Live convention in Las Vegas and yup, I like my French manis and pedis as a treat!. ;) And by the way *ahem, they are size 7 feet!

I would have my book, an Oprah magazine, my blackberry for the music only and a large pink lemonade crystal light with ice.

I couldn't find the original or get this cropped in Photobucket, so my logo/mark is cut off.

This weekend was Beachfest in Wasaga Beach. There were crowds of people enjoying the beach, sunshine, water, people watching - all sizes and ages - and the concerts. It was fun although we only stayed a short time and then returned to our very quiet beach a few kms away.

I enjoyed a freshly squeezed lemonade. Mmmm

This theatre, the Majestic, may look run down and shabby, but there are stories that could be told.

This was taken several years ago in Belize City, Belize, Central America. The sign stands out on an overcast grey day. The city is fascinating and there was a vibrancy in this Caribbean town. Oh.. it definitely IS the Mosquito Coast! I didn't take the photo, it is my camera and yes, that is me in front.

After a brief break, and missing all the latest photo memes, I am participating in Sepia Scenes this week ;)

This was taken on Lake Rosseau at Windermere in Muskoka, Ontario. I see our Grandparents many years ago, on the steam boats from Gravenhurst, dressed in their finest, bringing along trunks of clothing, the relaxing in these chairs for an afternoon tea. How grand :) I have had lunch there and it is just the loveliest location.

Thank you all for your woncerful comments, I love them. I am slower to get to my blog as I am on *gasp* dial up!! Booooohoooo *sobs* I hope to have high speed again soon - oh puleeeese - but in the meantime it has been so tough.

On a better note, I am outside and loving it. Its sunny and warm 15 degrees ( approx 60 F)

Main Street Ontario ~Ruby Tuesday

This is Hurontario St in downtown Collingwood Ontario. There is still the character and 'flavour' of small town Ontario despite the growth outside the town. I like the red brick and the fact they try to maintain the orginal buildings from the 19th century. Collingwood was a shipbuilding town with it's port on the southern end of Georgian Bay. the last ship launch was 26 years ago - I was there. We went over to see it, at the time I didn't realise I was watching history.

Skywatch Friday - Another Georgian Bay Sunset

I never tire of the sunsets, but I will get out with the camera now and see what I can do :o))

Taken late summer 2007 on a beach on the southern end of Georgian Bay, or as I like to call it Gorgeous Bay. It which really should be the 6th Great Lake/bay, instead of just part of Lake Huron.

Sepia Scenes ~ Small Cabin on Georgian Bay

I have posted this before but I like it. I pass it everyday in the warm weather (otherwise I drive by) This is a beautiful sandy beach on Southern Georgian Bay (part of the Great Lakes/lake Huron) It was probably built in the 40s and has a 'Summer of '42-ish quality to it :) ,Yes I am that old.

Watery Wednesday ~ At The Cottage

I love the blog Watery Wednesday and wanted to participate. So I selected this photo that I took this past fall. It was taken on top of the Niagara Escarpment in Blue Mountain, ON. I am looking east overlooking Southern Georgian Bay. That is the town of Collingwood and the grain elevator. I live directly across the Bay from the grain elevator (about 20 kms) on a beautiful sandy beach.

Windemere Resort in Muskoka Ontario

I have discovered HDR photography. I am using a simple camera and a trial version of Photomatix, which is why there is a logo on my photos.

I am liking the results so far. Most of the previous posts are using the program.

This was taken at Windermere, a charming resort at the north end of Lake Rosseau in Muskoka, Ontario. This is looking south down the lake. Windemere is 139 years old and is a grand, magnificant resort.

Trumpeter Swans

I love these beautiful birds.

You can see them at the Wye Marsh near Midland Ontario. They have a reintroduction program that tracks the swans and protects them to ensure their numbers continue to grow.

"The Wye Marsh is well known for the Trumpeter Swan reintroduction program that the wildlife centre has been operating since the 1980s. Currently, there are 55 to 60 adult Trumpeter Swan that nest within the marsh. Trumpeter Swans are restricted to North America, where they occur in three relatively distinct populations: Pacific Coast (over 16,000 birds), Rocky Mountain (2,500 birds), and Interior (over 900 birds). The Wye Marsh population of Trumpeter Swans is the largest concentration in Ontario, and comprises a significant percentage of the interior population. Historical nesting of Trumpeter Swans in the Wye Valley has been documented through archaeological evidence.

In addition to Trumpeter Swans, a relatively large colony of Black Terns also nests at Wye Marsh, with as many as 61 pairs being present. Although a national population estimate is not available for this species, a regional study (Priority Migratory Bird Habitats of Canadas Prairie Provinces 1990) used a threshold of 50 for identifying sites of national significance. The nationally vulnerable Least Bittern nests in significant numbers, with 11 pairs (approximately 1% of the Canadian population) surveyed in 2000. Other marsh nesting species include American Bittern, Virginia Rail, Sora, and Marsh Wren, among others. A total of 222 species of birds have been recorded at this site, of which 64 have been confirmed as nesters."
